A New Computer, A New Life?

In the past year my 12 inch Powerbook passed on. It was a sad day for me, like an old pet dying I became depressed and irritable. Not having that computer made me feel naked. It seemed everywhere I went I could have used having it by my side.
This was in December last year and although I crawled my way into the New Year and made an important resolution to try to change things for myself i still felt as if i was missing something.
January moved very quickly as today I am writing with only 2 days until February. Throughout the month there would have been times that my Powerbook would have saved a lot of time and problems for me. I knew that I would not be able to go without a Mac laptop. For my own survival in this technology age I took a stand.
I am now writing on my new MacBook Pro and feel my new bond growing. Many events in my life became immortalized on my Powerbook, I am excited to see what this MacBook will see.

192.168.1.254

I thought that I would be more productive at home without the internet to get in the way. I have a lot of home projects to take care of and I thought that without the distraction of interneting I would have no reason not to do the things that need to be done.
I was incorrect. Honestly I was VERY incorrect. Since I have lost the free internet (about 2 months now) that I was borrowing I have got nothing done.
Reasons:
1. Without internet at home I am more likely to go (or stay) somewhere else that does have internet. This leads to less time at my place to do any work.
2. Without internet at home I do not have access to entertainment. I can not just watch whatever it is I want to watch off the internet so i have to turn to other things like blockbuster. I have to travel to the blockbuster then travel back and then instead of an episode of a tv show that I would have watched now I have a 2 hour movie, that took a half hour to get.
3. Directions to places. Before I had a Garmin I could not go anywhere I needed to go quickly because i didn't know how to get there. This made for a lot of useless driving around. It is better now with the Garmin but I still like to plan the trip out first.
4. When I am bored at home, I will grab a beer. As soon as that happens all ambition flies out the window. With the internet, I get bored less.
So... I had to get connection to the internet. Next week my package arrives and I will hook up some decent speed DSL.

A Long Week
It has been a long week. I know we are all in mourning and this whole Heath Ledger thing is soooo terrible.
I really couldn't deal with it until I came across this website...

New Years Eve Recap...
I went through the footage that was taken throughout the night of New Years... Some was fun, some was embarrassing, and MOST was us doing wine bongs. A couple of times we had the camera on when we thought it was off and still other times the camera was off when we thought it was on.
I guess directors aren't drunk on set.
What I did was piece together a whole bunch of fun memories and put them together in a little movie. Here it is...
oh and to add to the Jurassic Park Theme...

Dance of Life
Nothing Really good to talk about today so you get a repost of a classic. This is what happens when you mix 5 weeks of running a summer camp with a weekend FULL of drinking and a safety blanket.

MacWorld
Yes it is a work day, but it shouldn't be.
Maybe next year I will have enough foresight to remember to take this day off. I can see it now, a Macworld party. My friends and I all watching the blog posts starting at noon (we are EST people) with the eventual full video of the keynote. We would all have out laptops and beers. When Steve Jobs says, "one more thing!" we take a shot. Then in our drunken excitement we order whatever comes out and don't realize until the next day hangover that it won't ship until March.
Well, that sounds like a plan for next year. For now I will sit here at work and wait for the Keynote in 5 min!

Balance Rock Condos
I got home last night after the gym. I was making my dinner, some salad and a little sandwich, nothing special before i turn in for the night. As I walk past my door I hear a knock. It was a faint knock but I went to my door anyway and opened the little peephole.
As I peeked out I say two officers of the law at the door next to mine. As they knocked again I remembered this weekend seeing a moving truck and people moving into the condo next to mine. Hoping to see a scene from cops I leaned closer to see if they where reaching for there guns yet.
In my mind all I could think of some fugitive moved in and a fight was about to start but with the next knock on the door my new neighbor answered. The police officers identified themselves as New York State Police and began to question the lady who opened the door. I will shorten the conversation but basically this lady was living in New York, didn't pay her rent for a couple of months was kicked out and when she left she settled with the land owner by giving him a check for 5 grand. Obviously the check bounced and the land owner called the police while this lady had already skipped out.
They worked out some payment plan and the police went on there way saying that if they do not hear that she keeps up with the terms they will have to arrest her. Pretty boring stuff, but that is the type of place I live in.

Technology or Common Sense

A funny thing happened today at work.
Someone came in with a lost Blackberry phone (Pictured on the right). He gave it to me and asked if I could find the owner because he was too busy and didn't know how to work it.
Of course I said yes. One of my favorite things to do is fiddle around with new toys and I have a good grasp on technology so I was sure that I could get the owners name and contact info.
First I check recent calls, in case there is a familiar name. The list was all numbers and no actual phone contacts so i move on.
Second I check the owner information of the phone. Almost every phone now has a part where you put in your name and your own number. Especially with smart phones there is a place to put in your info when you first activate your phone. I go to the owner info and it is blank.
With a great sigh for people who don't use there electronics correctly I am forced to move to email. Since this smart phone is synced directly to his Microsoft outlook account I can see on the home screen that he has 10 new emails. Within those emails is the To: section that would have the email.
Going through someone's email is something that I do not want to do. I feel it is a great violation of privacy so with hesitation to going through the emails I put the phone down on my desk. As I pull my hand away from the phone to ponder my decision I notice writing on the case. With a closer look I notice the owners name engraved in the leather case.
With a quick page the phone is back home with the owner

Friday 2008

It is Friday, so if you know me (and you did somehow meander to my blog so I assume you know me somewhat) you know it is time for some Friday cocktails.
I believe the plan is to hit a local bar called The Lake House for happy hour (dollar drafts for the win) and who knows from there.
What I am looking forward to this weekend is the relaxing time, I have painting to do that I continue to talk about that I would like to get done. Maybe some video games and a trip to the gym at some point in the weekend. With an open weekend like this it is nice to not have plans, especially after the holidays.
I think a nice nap will fit into my plans this weekend... Who knows maybe even some LOTR.

I Want My MTV
I don't have cable in my place yet.
Because of this I am forced to ask myself very difficult questions.
1. Do I really need cable?
I like to watch TV. I like lots of shows and was following them pretty closely before my absence of cable. But now, with the writers strike (I am on the Writers side) the quality of TV has been pretty bad. I don't like reality TV and if I do watch it i always feel like I should be doing something else.
2. Is there something better I should be doing other that watching TV?
Yes. But does that mean I will be doing it, or maybe i just want to relax. I have a lot of DVDs, and then all the shows on my computer, maybe I should save some money and do something constructive.
3. Internet, to pay or not to pay?
Who doesn't like some free Internet? The problem is stability. The Internet is not stable unless I have full control over it and how much is that security going to cost. I have Internet at work, week days for about 40 hours I have Internet, do I NEED to check the Internet over the nights and weekends?
4. Package deals?
Of course I have checked every possible package for Internet and TV to do some price shopping and what is comes down to is DSL Internet and satellite TV. Price range in the $60 - $100 for both depending on which plan I go with. Is that worth it? $1200 a year for nights and weekends of entertainment.
5. Will I save the money or use it for other garbage?
I will use it for other things not necessarily important for life but it would be another $100 a month for other fun things. $100 a month either way won't break or make my budget but is it worth it?
My initial answer now that I write out all my points is I do not need cable. It is a small sacrifice but maybe I will be able to finish painting my place with less distractions, or maybe I will find new distractions. Either way I was pretty sick of watching I Love New York : Season 8

2008

Season 2 is the best season of Sea Quest. Let that be known.
2008 started the best of any of the 2000s. Friends, Family, Fun, and most importantly happy people. I think for the first time in a couple years that i drank and had fun and was not a douche.
Rock Band, old friends, new friends, and a ton of booze (with a side of aquired hugging) makes for a good time
understandably today is the 2nd. What happened to Jan 1? i don't know. I do know that there was a lot of sea quest involved and fun was had by all.
Again thanks for Sarah and Mike for hosting the party and sorry about spewing all that wine out on your porch.
