The True Trouble with Facebook

I am not a Facebook hater. I was in early, back in the only specific college .edu email addresses would let you register days (iPods doubled as bricks and fancy cell phones had color). At that time I saw the use of Facebook. Get in touch with your friends you don't talk to very much in real life. It was a good idea then.

Then you had to look up (stalk) your friends on a computer. You could talk on the wall or "poke" them. Maybe look at some photos, hope for a good one. Lots of fun things that you could do on your computer.

The problem with Facebook now is portability. I had a bad problem of drunk dialing when I was late in college and had free nights and weekends with my t-mobile nokia black and white shit phone. The next day I would look at my outgoing calls list and worry about the next time I would see these people again. They would play me my message and

Sorry my phone died and I forgot my thought...

Lucky 600!

This is my 600th post on Superfluous Pics and Thoughts.

Today is St. Patrick's Day.

Those are two facts, combined I would think this should be a celebration post. I suppose it is a reason to celebrate, 600 post is a lot of posts. Most of them are pictures of my beers that I drank years ago. Beers that I loved for those ten minutes and then moved on to the next one. Disgracing the empty glass for a brand new one.

St. Patrick's day was about the same theme I suppose. Only I see more green plastic cups being tossed into the garbage after one use.

Taking pictures of the beer I am about to drink may be the dumbest past time that I have. But how else am I going to show off how excited I am for the drink I am about to consume. When I look at that picture the next day I can smile and see the beginning of whatever happened that night. When I look at that picture in the next couple of years after that I just see another in many nights that started with a beer.

My lady and myself have taken the steps to have a traditional american Irish meal for tonight. We cut potatoes and cabbage this morning and placed that in the slow cooker with the corned beef. Set the timer for 10 hours and went to work. There is a Guinness case in the fridge that will be opened tonight during the festivities. Maybe i will wear a funny green hat while I drink the Guinness and eat the corned beef and cabbage. Maybe not.

I think the Irish tradition is a good one to keep going with. Tasty food and beer seems like something i can get behind. Just having a tradition is something that is appealing. This is not some new idea to do something you like and then annualize it so you can do it again. I guess people need an excuse to have some fun, or to get together with friends.

I haven't heard of anyone just having a party because they want to have a party (except college). There always has to be a shoe horned idea behind the party. Luckily there are plenty of reasons people can use for a party; birthdays, holidays, new house, new baby, new marriage, anniversaries, selling house, camping, new movie, sporting event, television event, fundraiser, and when those don't fit a good costume party can come into play.

Well today is my 600th post party, which happens to be on St. Patrick's day. I am going to assume every Guinness that is drank today is for my blog's 600th post. Congratulations blog and congratulations me!

WAR

Why does Diet Pepsi taste like rum and coke to me?

My guess is that Pepsi is in the soda guns in bars. I wonder if it is cheaper to have Pepsi products than coke products in a place where it really doesn't matter. I bet in the beginning of the Coke vs Pepsi war there was a big push for Pepsi to advertise the "Rum and Pepsi" is better than the "Rum and Coke". I think we all know which one won.

But maybe the joke is on Coke. Maybe Coke won the mainstream McDonald sponsor, but Pepsi is the unseen seller in bars around the world. They are snickering to themselves when "rum and Coke" is ordered because the money is really going into Pepsi's pocket. I guess a large portion of americans eat McDonald, but a large portion also like a tasty mixer with rum.

I hope there are people in suits at Pepsi with graphs showing the increase of purchases of pepsi by bars. They are standing around, laughing as the summertime comes. They know people will be going out to bars, dancing on decks, looking at a body of water, and shouting "Rum and Coke" but what really comes is rum and Pepsi.

Or none of this is true. I don't know, in my head that is how it works.
